Hereafter - Outra vida

People like us routinely long for a meaningful life, while other people need to do this in extremely dramatic circumstances. The former will be the major spectators of Clint Eastwood’s latest film, Hereafter. The latter are its characters.
Three parallel stories are linked by the theme “after-life”: a woman that survives the tsunami in Thailand and cannot deal anymore with her promising career as a journalist, a man that avoids his mediumship because he feels it weighs a ton to live the life of dead people, and a little boy who is devastated by the death of his beloved twin brother.
The plot seems spiritualist. However, I reckon Hereafter is above any religion or philosophy, such as Kerdecism. Even though spirits show an important role as guardians in some scenes, the film prioritizes the dignity of the human drama. The main characters are ultimately gathered and rewarded by a meaningful destiny, but this happens only as a consequence of their commitment to a genuine sorrow.
Depending on our own beliefs, Hereafter can be seen as realistic or far-fetched, but I dare say few of us would be insensitive to this moving film, gently handled by the director and the cast.
