The High Line – Urban Planning and Mental Health
Strolling along NYC’s High Line is a wonderful experience. There is much talk about urban revitalization and human-centric urban planning, yet in practice—at least in São Paulo—what I see are buildings rising side-by-side with no setback requirements, no room to open a window to a pleasant view, and no creation of neighborhood leisure areas; instead, there is a growing congestion of cars, leading to increased pollution and traffic.
Walking the High Line in NYC, however, offers exactly the kind of space that is missing elsewhere. A former railway line has been transformed into a delightful elevated walkway winding through buildings, trees, flowers, and sculptures. There is room to sit and breathe; one can read or simply admire the scenery.
It is a lovely invitation to visit the city and enjoy pleasant moments, even amidst the traffic and the rush of a major metropolis. Mental health requires this—it needs aesthetics. It needs beauty amidst the chaos to help us find our balance again.
It is well worth the visit and the appreciation. Every city needs places like this—an invitation to walk and reflect. A balm for the soul!
